to basteraud is to use a lie to cover yourself when you have been caught out in a lie . in honour of the french rugby player who claimed to have been -ssaulted in wellington,nz going back to his hotel . when police noted that he had in fact entered the hotel uninjured, he ‘fessed up that he had slipped in his hotel room .
turned out his team mates had beaten him in the hotel for being out of control . hence the expression “to basteraud” , or to use a lie when caught out lying.
