Belgrano
(n.) argentinian cruiser the general belgrano was the first ship ever to be sunk by a nuclear sub during wartime. it was sunk in the early stages of the falklands war by british hms conqueror. it was origi-n-lly the us navy’s “phoenix” world war ii ship, now sold to argentina.
the hms conqueror fired six torpedoes, two of which hit directly. the first instantly killed 275 argentines sailors, the second ripping off 15 feet of the hull, dooming the ship.
over 700 of the belgrano’s crew were saved, out of 1,138.
