from the medieval ages: a bodag was a child that was placed in a box at a young age. as he grew his limbs were enc-mbered by the hard walls of the box, hence he became deformed.
whence he was old enough and sufficiently deformed he would be let out of the box and left to run around the court; providing much entertainment to the onlookers.
