bradley effect

the tendency of white voters, when asked by a telephone pollster to choose between a black candidate and a white candidate, to state that they intend to vote for the black candidate when they actually intend to vote for the white candidate because they fear being perceived as racist by the person asking them the question. this phenomenon was offered as the explanation for why tom bradley lost the 1982 california gubernutorial race in spite of the fact that all polling indicated a victory.
the polls indicate a victory for d’quane, but this may be due to the bradley effect.
