city state
a state (country) based around a single city and its surounding land. city states do not have defined borders and no city states exist in the modern world.
babylon, athens, and sparta are all ancient city states.
a small independent state consisting of an urban center and the surrounding agricultural territory. a characteristic political form in early mesopotamia, archaic and cl-ssical greece, phoenicia, and early italy.
the term city-state refers to a self-governing urban center and the agriculture territories it controlled.
