a region of E Canada, formerly the Ungava district of Northwest Territories (1895–1912), extending from the line of the Eastmain and Hamilton Rivers north between Hudson Bay and Labrador; absorbed by Quebec in 1912; contains extensive iron deposits. Area: about 777 000 sq km (300 000 sq miles)
