trying to move from a good position to a best position and ending up worse off ; cf the old adage “the best is the enemy of the good”
theresa may is the uk prime minister whose conservative party had a a working majority in the uk parliament . she tried to increase the size of that majority by calling an election on 8th june 2017. although the largely conservative party supporting uk press predicted a landslide victory she in fact ended up losing her overall majority the major oppostiion party (labour ) having gained 30 more seats than they held before the election. theresa may has now lost her overall majority and is in a greatly weakened political position. whence the expression “doing a theresa”.
