phrase used to lull a person into a false sense of attaining a desired thing and then having it taken away before the person takes possession.
-a kid is laying flat on broken ice and his comrades are looking for a way to help him. a grizzly old man, whose land the children are tresp-ssing on pipes in with his advice:

“alright, give ’em the stick.”

kids lean out to extend the stick to the wayward lad.

“don’t give ’em the stick!!!”

the kid drowns.
