illegal cancellation
the act of incorrectly crossing out any common digit in both the numerator (top part) and the denominator (bottom part) of a fraction to get the correct answer.
to simplify the fractions 16/64 and 26/65, joe performed an illegal cancellation, by eliminating the common digit 6 to correctly obtain the simplified fractions 1/4 and 2/5, respectively.
