a contraction of the italian words “merde de canne”; meaning “dog sh-t. (or literally “sh-t of dog”) this reference was used by italian immigrants and their 1st generation italian-american off-spring to describe non-italians.

somebody asked in italian “what’s that?that’s not italian” the other went:”è mericane” and the other “it’s merd di cane!!!” to mean that american food was like dog’s sh-t. (mericano – merda di cane – medigan it’s the way it’s pr-nounced in english.
