when smoking marijuana, a piece of the nug is broken off and squished flat. it is then placed at the bottom of the bowl to block the shake from getting sucked through, while still providing airflow.

another tip is (if you see a trail of smoke coming from the bowl) to cap it and cut off oxygen so the cherry stops burning. otherwise extra thc is burnt off and wasted.
