New Atheism
new atheism is the name given to a group of atheists from around the world who have taken atheism in a militant direction. they have sometimes been described as “evangelical atheists” due to the fact that they preach non-belief as fervently as fundamentalist evangelical christians preach belief. they call themselves the new atheists because they are attempting to re-brand the image people have in their heads when atheism is mentioned. a few decades ago, the mention of an atheist brought up the mental image of a frumpy aclu lawyer with messed up hair and dark circles under his eyes. but the new atheists are attempting to be more culturally “cool” and attractive. other than this, and their new-found militant approaches, there is nothing really new about the new atheists.
student 1: “there’s a debate tonight between a physics professor arguing for the new atheism, and a christian mathematics professor arguing for theism. do you want to go?”
student 2: “oh you betcha! you know, because nothing says ‘party’ like a math nerd and an physicist going at it like an old married couple.”
