rumble strip
the line of grooves that are cut into the side of highways which cause a loud noise when a driver gets too close to the edge.
whenever i’m getting road head it’s hard not to hit the rumble strip.
a strip of grooved pavement along the side of the highway, consisting of a pattern of indentations in the pavement. makes a loud rumbling noise when driven upon. designed as a safety device to alert drivers when they are about to go off the side of the road. looks something like this:

i must have dozed off at the wheel because next thing i know, i heard a loud noise and found myself driving on the rumblestrip.
