sakamoto math
the j-panese’s minimalist approach to solving a math word problem, with the aim to use as few steps as possible to yield an elegant or creative solution.
a sakamoto math solution to the grade five rate problem below uses two instead of the traditional three steps.
problem: beth was walking 6 km ahead of ann, who caught up with beth in 3 hours. if ann’s speed was 10 km/h, find beth’s speed.
solution: to make up for the extra 6 km in 3 hrs, ann needed to walk 2 km more than beth every hour, or ann’s speed was 2 km/h faster than that of beth.
since ann’s speed was 10 km/h, beth’s speed must be (10 – 2) = 8 km/h.
