since the war
a phrase used to indicate ambiguous and eternal duration, usually for a problem. equivalent to “since the beginning”, “always”, or “at the get-go”. it is a somewhat comedic reference to the continual state of war that the usa has been in for as long as anyone has been alive.
sam: fred, how long have you had all these strange food allergies?
fred: since the war. i don’t ever recall being able to eat peanuts.
