skeleton benefit


n. pl. a work-related benefit having to do with a job (generally contract work for a major company) that on the surface seems useful, but in reality is of little or no practical merit.
the health care benefit offered to me by my contracting company was nothing but a skeleton benefit… a short-term major medical plan that wouldn’t accept anybody who had to regularly take prescription drugs! and they advertised the job as having “comprehensive health care benefits”, too!
