tears of a clown
a phrase used to describe a person who appears joyful and chipper around people but is actually emotionally distraught. usually this results from heartbreak or a severely stubbed toe.
johnny: have you heard al’s joke about his last ex!!!?
betty: it’s funny! but i’m sure he hides the tears of a clown.
johnny: …betty your such a frikin downer.
