short for washington metropolitan area transit authority, which operates subway and bus systems in the washington dc area. also called metro. the initials are normally pr-nounced, particularly in regards to their web site.

replaced an excellent and very cool trolley system with conduit cars in the city with said monotonous subway and cr-ppy buses.
