marital parasite
a marital parasite is typically a third party related to one spouse brought into a relationship and household. the excuse for the presence of the parasite in the household is a universal one: the person is “on hard times” or they are ” getting over a rough relationship” and the spouse is obligated to help them out because “they’re family, and family does that.”
this puts the other spouse in an indefensible position. any complaints about the situation are met as an attack on the parasite or the parasite’s family. the parasite either knows this innately or eventually figures it out. the parasite gradually usurps the unwilling spouse’s standing as an equal to the other spouse and household decisions are made without their involvement. the parasite will likely not acknowledge the presence of the victimized spouse, usually leaving the room when they’re present, or not talking while they are in the room.
when the marriage parasite is allowed to change the thermostat and the victimized spouse is not, the marriage is essentially over.
