Merits and Demerits of Transition Lens

Most individuals assume that being myopic and long-sighted are the only complications that force people to opt for eyeglasses. However, some are affected by light; too much light harms their eye, makes them uncomfortable and even irritates them. In such a scenario, these people are advised to resort to lenses. There are lenses designed to cope with different lighting conditions; when in the dark, these lenses are clear, while in too much light, they become dark to protect the eyes of the person using them. These lenses protect your eyes from the blue lights, which can be harmful, dust and UV light. The transitional lens has several merits and demerits, as discussed below.

Merits

They come in multiple options.

For transition lenses, their functionality is not affected by the frames used. This means you could opt for cat eye frames, silver frame or statement-making and transform them into a transitional lens. This makes them both functional and fashionable. This also puts you at the liberty of selecting the color that best suits your skin complexion and the shape of the face. Some people even customize different pairs of their eyeglasses using transitional lenses so that their medical and fashion needs can be met concurrently.

They offer protection from UV light.

Transition lenses adapt to different lighting conditions; when in the dark, they become clear, which makes it easy to see and when exposed to too much light, they become dark. Exposure to UV rays can damage different parts of the eye, such as the macula; this is the part of the eye responsible for central vision – which means if destroyed, one would face the risk of being blind. If you work in an environment with UV lights, don’t wait until it’s too late, the cost of a transition lens cannot be compared to the loss of your eyesight.

Transition lenses protect your eyes from blue lights.

All screens contain blue led lights, and we spend significant amounts of time in front of these screens. This often results in headaches and straining the eyes. Eventually, one develops complications with their eyes. Transition lenses protect the eyes from these blue lights, which means one can comfortably use their devices for extended amounts of time without straining their eyes.

Most come with AR coating.

The anti-reflective coating fosters vision more at night; and reduces glare from natural and unnatural light sources.

Demerits

Like any other lens, there are also downsides of transition lens that include;

The transition is not instant.

Most individuals would assume that the transition is instant for these lenses. However, this is not the case; the adjustments from dark to clear and vice versa take a couple of minutes before it takes place. The darkening is not complete in areas with light penetration and vehicles.

Changing shades can be pretty disorienting

The eyes, too, do not adapt to these new settings instantly, which can be quite uncomfortable. If you work in both well-lit and dark areas, your eyes might develop complications due to the constant changes.

They are relatively expensive.

Unlike ordinary eyeglasses meant for fashion, there are extra details in the transition lens. Therefore, their prices are relatively higher compared to the prices of standard eyeglasses. They are also not available in beauty accessory stores; they are to be prescribed and administered by opticians as they are considered functional glass.

All being said and done, it’s up to you to decide whether you need transitional lenses or not. Your eye condition, work environment or even your work are among the factors influencing this decision. If you work with screens for extended periods, have eye complications due to exposure to excessive light or work in places with UV lights, this is your sign to get a transition lens.
