The Washing Machine Has Stopped Draining Water – What To Do?

One of the most common problems with washing machines is that they stop draining water. Several reasons can contribute to this, and it is desirable to have at least some idea about them in order to draw up a further algorithm for working with equipment and fix the problem as quickly as possible. Often, there is a section the error code and troubleshooting manual in the modern washing machines.

Electronics failure

Sometimes the washing machine can stop its work literally halfway through – the program starts to falter at the stage of draining the water and stops without completing the work cycle. The display might show an error code! What can be done in this case:

• check whether the selected program actually includes a drain or spin cycle;

• check the stability of the electrical network in the room;

• reboot the unit by switching it off and on again;

• test the operation of the drain function using the buttons separately allocated for this.

Checking the drain hose

If the actions indicated in the previous section of the article were not successful, it is worth checking the connection of the hose through which the machine drains. Also check the location of the height of its kink (at least 60 cm from the bottom edge of the machine), exclude the possibility of twisting or compression, the presence of blockages both in the hose itself and in the sewer pipe.

Filter check

The next troubleshooting step is to inspect the filter on the drain pump. It is located, as a rule, on the front panel of the unit under the cover. The cover can be removed using a knife or a flathead screwdriver, depending on the model of your machine. The filter itself is unscrewed using the handle located on it, this manipulation may require some effort, because the part is tightly sealed with a rubber gasket. If the filter cannot be twisted out, in order to avoid its breakage, it is better to entrust this action to a specialist. In the case when you managed to remove it yourself, you need to check the part for clogging. At the same time, you can perform manipulations to drain the water from the tank of the machine through the drain pipe located near the filter. To do this, take care of the necessary containers for pouring water in advance.

It is worth noting that the drain pump filter may not be present in all washing machines; it is sometimes absent in inexpensive models. Filter cleaning is recommended to be carried out at least once every five years.

Pipe cleaning

If checking the electronics, drain hose, and filter fails, further steps to find the cause of the non-working drain will require the help of a qualified washing machine repairman.

One of the factors preventing the normal operation of the drain may be a blockage in the pipe connecting the pump to the tank of the machine. It is highly not recommended to get this part on your own, so as not to cause even more damage to the unit. The specialist will perform this manipulation quite easily and quickly.

Checking the pump impeller

Another common cause of a non-working drain is interference with the operation of the pump impeller. It is located directly behind the filter, it is easy to check it by trying to unwind the blades by hand. If this fails, then you need to look for objects that interfere with its work. In case of their absence, we proceed to check the pump itself.

Pump test

The consequence of wear or breakdown of the pump is often a malfunction of the drain of the machine. In case of its absolute breakdown, the replacement of the part must be carried out only in the service center. As a rule, the pump does not fail at once, this is always preceded by its incorrect operation – periodic stops and suspicious sounds.

Other reasons

If you have checked all of the above points, and the cause of the inoperability of the drain has not been found, the next step is to check the electronic board of the machine and its electrical wiring. Such work certainly cannot be carried out independently, but only under the supervision of a competent specialist. Troubleshooting electronics may require flashing or replacing the module. The integrity of the wiring of the unit will also require the qualification of an electrician.

In any case, in order to avoid causing even more damage to your machine, we recommend that you contact the service department for help in restoring its operation. Do not take risks and take care of your equipment, and let it serve you for many more years.
