If you adore travelling, then you’d likely love nothing more than to spend your life exploring the globe. Alas, that’s unlikely to be possible. While there are plenty of cheap and cheerful destinations around the world, the pennies do add up. And in any case, what with our jobs and other responsibilities, the majority of us would not have the time to set off an adventure whenever we felt like it anyway.
However, the good news is that you don’t necessarily need to board a plane in order to explore the world. That’s the most direct — and best — way to do it, but it’s not the only way. Indeed, you can get your fill of the world without even leaving your home. In this blog, we’ll run through some of the best ways you can do that. The next time you get the itch to travel, scratch it with one of the following methods.
Watching Documentaries
If you want to travel, then you’ll have to contend with crowds, heavy bags, and long days. If you travel by watching documentaries, however, you won’t even need to get up off your couch. There are countless travel docs that’ll take you to the heart of a different place and culture. You can journey to places that are difficult to visit, such as Antarctica; Werner Herzog’s Encounters At The End Of The World is probably the best one about the most southern continent. If you’re looking for more of a cultural excursion then choose a food-based travel show, such as Chef’s Table which is available on Netflix.
Exciting Games
Interactive entertainment can also help to fill the travel-sized hole in your life. If you have a PlayStation, check out fantasy games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or the Final Fantasy series. If you don’t have a console, then you can use your laptop or other devices to play travel-based slot games set in online mystical worlds, or you can test your travel knowledge by playing GeoGuessr, a game that asks you to figure out where in the world you are using GoogleMaps. These options might not be quite as good as the real thing, but they are, at the very least, a lot of fun.
In the Kitchen
We mentioned earlier how you could travel to other destinations by watching food shows and documentaries. But what about cooking up a meal yourself? Part of the joy of travelling is tasting all the delicious ingredients, spices, and cocktails from around the world. In an age when you can buy more or less anything no matter where you are, you can prepare these meals and drinks right from your own kitchen. If you’re itching to visit Mexico, then look up some authentic Mexican dishes, make yourself a michelada beer, crank up those Mexican songs, and have a fun evening in the kitchen. It’ll be a little taste of heaven.
E-Visits to Museums and Other Destinations
Where would we be without the internet? It has made travelling so much more straightforward when we’re out on the road, and it also allows us to spend some time in different places even if we’re thousands of miles away from them. Many of the world’s best museums have put their collections online, which allows users to go on a “virtual tour” of their interiors. If you’re more into exploring whilst you’re travelling then fire up Google Earth, drop yourself somewhere exotic, and enter Street View. It’ll give you a reasonably good sense of what the place is like.
Relive Past Travels
If you’ve been on adventures in the past, then why not take a trip down memory lane? Travellers have a tendency to always look forward, but there’s a lot of value in slowing down and looking back on all the places that you’ve been. It’ll make you grateful for all that you’ve had the chance to experience so far — and whet your appetite for all the adventures that are yet to come.
