Old English (Northumbrian) fryhto, metathesis of fyrhtu “fear, dread, trembling, horrible sight,” from Proto-Germanic *furkhtaz “afraid” (cf. Old Saxon forhta, Old Frisian fruchte, Old High German forhta, German Furcht, Gothic faurhtei “fear”).
