a bar shuffle is a solution to the common problem of when there are two non adjacent empty bar stools. it is when someone moves to an adjacent empty seat at a bar in order to allow for the two empty seats to be together so two people can sit next to each other. sometimes the bartender will ask people to perform the bar shuffle, and other times a kind patron may offer.
