in sports, a very good player who plays long enough that, by the end of his career, he’s acc-mulated great career stats. but he never really stood out, he was never really dominant, and there was never a time when he was the best player at his position. he’s got some great career totals, though, so he might get into the hall of fame.
son: dad, i saw eddie murray’s career totals yesterday on espn. he was a great player, huh?
dad: nah, he was a very good player who played long enough that he was able to pile up great career numbers. that’s why he’s in the hall of fame. but there was never a time during his career when i watched him and thought, “wow, that eddie murray’s a special player.” in the sports world, he’s called a compiler. nothing personal.
