flake tool
A stone tool consisting of a flake that is often modified by further chipping or flaking. Although sharp-edged flakes removed in the production of core tools were presumably used as cutting tools by early humans, true flake tools are those that were purposefully removed from the core and then modified for a particular purpose. Flake tools include scrapers, awls, projectile points, and blades. Compare core tool.
