fsck

Short for file system check, fsck is a system utility that is used to check and repair inconsistencies in Unix and Unix-based file systems, including Linux. Fsck can be run in one of two modes:

Interactive mode is where fsck scans the file system and, at each error, prompts the user to correct or continue without making changes to the file system.
Noninteractive mode allows fsck to run and repair all problems it finds automatically without user input.

On a Windows-based system, the equivalent utility is called chkdsk.
