Ed Ricketts
a close friend of the n-bel/ pulitzer prize winning author john steinbeck. he was a marine biologist and an outspoken pacifist who believed in ghandiesque principles that “an eye for the eye makes the whole world go blind”.
ed ricketts’ friendship with steinbeck is doc-mented in the non-fiction novel “the log from the sea of cortez”, and many cl-ssic steinbeck characters are based on him: such as ‘doc’ in “cannery row”, ‘doc’ in in dubious battle, ‘jim casy’ in “the grapes of wrath”, and ‘doctor winter’ in “moon is down”.
note: all the characters ricketts inspired are reserved, contemplative, and share an admiration for strong character and internal courage.
