when in an elevator it is the tendency of people to avoid looking at another’s face or acknowledging another person. it is caused by a lack of ease which comes from people being forced to intrude on each other’s personal sp-ce within the confines of an elevator. personal sp-ce is the region around a person which they psychologically consider to be theirs. if this sp-ce is invaded by another person they will feel threatened and uneasy.
inside an elevator people are forced to stand closer together than they would otherwise. this invasion of each other’s personal sp-ce makes each person feel uneasy. to deal with the feeling of invasion people look upward or at the elevator numbers in an attempt to ignore the intrusion into their sp-ce. this the elevator reflex

the urge people get once inside an elevator to stare compulsively at the ascending numbered lights (usually on top of the elevator doors) either because they are truly convinced this will speed up the whole ‘process’ or they are simply socially-awkward beings who can’t bear to look at random people in the face for 30 seconds.
