in northern ireland and ireland (at least), a fluke (pr-nounced flook) is a verb meaning to win against the odds. it can also be used as a noun meaning something won against the odds or someone who wins that way.
fluke tends to be a positive appreciation of good luck, rather than a denial of the win. it can be used to playfully reject someone’s win though, or to be humble about one’s own win.
(in appreciation of someone winning): “whoa, flukey. well done!”
(in bemused disbelief that someone won a football game): “jeez, how did you score that goal? you weren’t even kicking it right. what a fluke!”
(in happy humility after winning): “thanks. it was just a fluke really”.
(when someone beats you in a game, but you’re convinced you’ll win next time): “fluke! let’s go again.”
(to tell a story without it seeming boastful): “well, the whole thing was a fluke really. back in early spring, i…”
the name that most people use to refer to the los angeles angels of anaheim (aka, the anaheim angels and the california angels).
they’re the flukes because somehow, they stumbled into a world series win in 2002. most people just laugh at the aristotelian confluence of improbable events that made this possible. the team had no talent and has accomplished nothing since, so yeah, they’re the flukes, and shall be called thus forevermore.
the flukes might have accidentally taken the world series because during spring training, their r-t-rded rally monkey farted on several team members. of course, the players loved it because, well, they’re nasty and r-t-rded. they inhaled enough of the gas to destroy what little of their brains they had left, and they forgot how horrible they really were at baseball, and had career years, all for reasons p-ssing understanding.
of course, that’s just one fluke theory. any other explanation is probably just as good for the flukes to have accidentally taken the world series.
