Hyper-Violence
usually used to describe depictions or actions that are overtly graphic in the representation of violence. used in relation to media that offers a preponderance of violence over any other element in the narrative. the term is used equally in relation to s-xual violence, often to imply a sublimated s-xual motivation for the violence. the term is synonymous with the term ultra-violence, which arises from “a clockwork orange” by anthony burgess.
perhaps the extreme hyper-violence reflects spain’s old scars re-imagined by a mexican director guillermo del toro, but it held me away from falling into the magic realism of the story.
