south german (stäuble): diminutive of staub. the entire surname suggests ‘to cause a storm’ in the metaphorical sense, though a literal translation might be ‘to cause a dust storm.’
although originally ‘von stäuhble,’ many teuton’s including american immigrants from switzerland and germany shortened to ‘stäuble.’ during the wars of the early and mid-20th century, north americans of teutonic ancestry further ‘americanized’ their surnames to prevent suspician of potential loyalty to the advesary. ‘von’ was eliminated by a number of the stäuble clanmembers at this time. similarly, during the period of anti-german feelings in england during world war i, many german names and t-tles were changed and given more english-sounding names, including the royal family’s from saxe-coburg-gotha to windsor.
