vietnam stare
the quick glance soldiers gave each other in vietnam because they didn’t know how long each of them were going to be around to get to know each other. today, the term is applied to ‘newbie’ people who move to a urban neighborhood from another state or from the suburbs during gentrification. these ‘newbies’ stay a handful of years at most before leaving to go back where they came from or to an area which has better schools and no crime.
our neighbors just moved in next door and i gave them the ‘vietnam stare’ when they waved at me.
