an abbreviation for christmas, from the greek spelling of christ, the first letter of which was chi (“x”).

contrary to popular belief, the x in x-mas was not made up by the secular heathens in california (no attack intended). x-mas was a shorter version of christmas, first used in europe around the 1500s. in greek, christ’s name started with an x, xristos. thus, it is literally, “christ-mas”, or “christ’s m-ss”.
x-mas = christmas
so, you are not offending g-d when you say xmas.
it just means christmas. it’s easier to write if you put an x. no one is trying to take the precious christ out of christmas. for g-d’s sake, lighten up. your religion’s not going to die because we say xmas instead of christmas.

‘xmas’ is another way saying ‘chirstmas’ which is supposed to be more secular than the latter. however, the ‘x’ part of ‘xmas’ was used by early chirstians to identify themselves as a follower of christ. by marking an ‘x’, they signified either a safe house, gathering place, or the like. x is the character for the greek letter “chi” which was the first letter of jesus’ name in greek.

to say that xmas may have no religious value today is perhaps true, but ironic becasue xmas and chirstmas are literally one in the same.

the festive holiday in the tv show futurama. having created a robot santa to carry out the work of a real santa, an error in his programming causes him to judge that everyone is naughty. xmas is therefore a holiday of fear, where all hide from robot santa as he tries to kill everyone he finds on xmas day.

xmas quite literally means christmas. the ‘x’ is a representative of the greek symbol chi which means christ. there for xmas stands for christmas and is just a short hand version of writing christmas, and in no way removes the religious connotation of the holiday.
