excessive excretion of h-m-gentisic acid in the urine, caused by a hereditary abnormality of the metabolism of tyrosine and phenylalanine. alkaptonuria al·kap·to·nu·ri·a or al·cap·to·nu·ri·a (āl-kāp’tə-nur’ē-ə, -nyur’-) n. an inherited disorder that affects phenylalanine and tyrosine metabolism and leads to the excretion of h-m-gentisic acid in the urine. also called h-m-gentisuria.
