when one person in a relationship does everything they can to have power and control over the other person, which includes physical violence, verbal and emotional abuse, stalking, or s-xual -ssault. dating violence is more than a one time incident… it is a pattern of abuse that usually happens more and more and gets worse and worse over time. it can affect all people: young and old, black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, and everyone inbetween.
friend: my boyfriend is so friggin’ controlling i can’t stand it anymore, but i’m scared to leave him because he said he would kill himself if i ever left him.
other friend: dude, that is soooo dating violence. he’s doing everything he can to control you!
friend: is that why he made me unfriend all my guy friends on facebook?
other friend: yup
friend: is that why he told me that if i didn’t have s-x with him that he would leave me?
