the southernmost neighborhood of the borough of manhattan. coterminous with the new amsterdam settlement of the late 17th century, the financial district roughly encomp-sses the area south of city hall park, excluding battery park and battery park city. so called because it is home to some of the largest financial inst-tutions in the world, including the new york stock exchange (nyse) and federal reserve.
in the years since 9/11, in light of its historic scenary, high-rises views, and proximity to soho, tribeca, chinatown and dumbo, the financial district has become a sought-after real estate investment for the young and upwardly mobile of new york city.
