somewhere you go by yourself or with another fellow loser (usually a sports bar or irish pub) where you can -ssociate with people in a similar predicament and pretend you have something in common. also, any activity you do by yourself that starts a conversation with a total stranger. this term can be applied to many things.
patton oswalt in “big fan” would go to the giants game with his “friend” and hang out in the parking lot even though they didn’t have tickets, thus….free friends among the crowd.
