hit the ditch
the act of an out-of-control vehicle sliding off an icy road into a roadside ditch. also used to describe a vehicle that has done so, and is now stuck in deep snow.
i drove through a blizzard yesterday on the highway. i must have seen a dozen cars that hit the ditch on the way.
