La bohème
a four-act opera by giacomo puccini, detailing the life of eight friends living in paris in 1830-1831 under the struggle of poverty and tuberclosis. the famous 1996 rock musical rent is an updated version of la bohème.
the main characters are rodolfo, a poet; marcello, a painter; mimì, a seamstress; colline, a philosopher; shaunard, a musician; musetta, a singer; alcindoro, a state councilor; and benoît, a landlord.
it is the second most performed opera in north america.
