Ocean Walker Effect
when a person says they enjoyed something (most often a film or piece of art) just so they won’t look stupid for not understanding it, they are suffering from the ocean walker effect.
named after an arrested development eposode (the ocean walker), with the line “people are going to say ‘what the h-ll just happened?’ and i’d better say i like it because n-body wants to seem stupid!”
person 1: “i loved the movie a.i with haley joel osment. it was such a moving and meaningfull movie.”
person 2: “you didn’t love that move, you liar. you just didn’t understand it and want to look smart. it’s the ocean walker effect.”
