playing spades
“i’m ‘playing spades’ over at my friend’s tonight,” might literally refer to socializing over the card game. however, some african-americans use it as a subtle slap-down at white people, many of whom will take it at face value, thus displaying a kind of cluelessness which can be silently mocked. in such cases, “playing spades,” basically means it’s-none-of-your-d-mn-business-what-i’m-going-to-do,” and also usually “no white people are invited/welcome.”
“i’m heading over to my friend’s house. i’m playing spades with him and some homies tonight.”
