poetic math

a term that refers to the promotion of creative or intuitive solutions to math problems, as compared to the traditionally long and tedious methods.
problem: “when my father was 43, i was 13. now he is twice as old as i am. how old am i?”
poetic math solution: “since the age difference is always 30, so i must be 30 if my father is twice as old.”—instead of solving the equation (43 + x) = 2(13 + x), where x is the number of years when my dad will be twice as old as me.
