a cryptographic hash function that computes a 160-bit hash value of some given data. often used to obscure p-sswords in databases. it’s significantly more secure than md5, but some weaknesses have been published. consider using an sha2 family hash algorithm instead, such as sha256. other alternatives include ripemd160 and whirlpool.
