a shouldvitation is a noncommittal invitation because it lacks a specific date for an event to occur. it may be intended sincerely or it may be an empty, insincere and pointless invitation intended as a brush-off for the purpose of ending a conversation. an empty invitation made out perceived duty, obligation, or politeness. multiple shouldvitations that are not followed up with a commitment point to a lack of genuine friendship or interest. famously used in the movie “take this waltz” written by sarah polley and starring mich-lle williams.
friend #1 “we should get together for coffee or lunch some time.”
friend #2 “you said that before. is this just a shouldvitation or a real invitation? they are very different things.”
