sou desu ka
j-panese for “is that so?”. not really meant as a question, but more as an acknowledgement of what is being said.
person 1: kinou wa nihon ni ikimash-ta. (i went to j-pan yesterday.)
person 2: sou desu ka. (is that so? meaning “oh really, that’s pretty d-mn cool yo.”)
