true story

contrary to popular belief, true story is used to make a story more believable.

don’t agree with me? check out the example and see for yourself.
story 1:
person 1: so, how was the party at fender’s last night?
person 2: dude, you’re not going to believe this. i drank a full keg of beer, did a couple lines of cocaine off a striper’s back, ran a marathon, and had s-x with your mother. i also won the lottery, did a backflip off the roof of a house, had a three way with two girls, and smoked a kilo of pot. did i mention i had s-x with your mother? i then woke up this morning, felt no effect, and went to work.
-awkward silence-
person 1: you f-cking liar!

story 2:
person 1: so, how was the party at fender’s last night?
person 2: dude, you’re not going to believe this. i drank a full keg of beer, did a couple lines of cocaine off a striper’s back, ran a marathon, and had s-x with your mother. i also won the lottery, did a backflip off the roof of a house, had a three way with two girls, and smoked a kilo of pot. did i mention i had s-x with your mother? i then woke up this morning, felt no effect, and went to work.
person 2: true story.
person 1: well, since you said true story, it must be true. i believe you.

now tell me. which version of the story do you think is more believable? that’s what i thought.

1) attempts to make a ridiculous story more believable

or

2) indicates agreement over a silly or politically incorrect comment that the speaker agrees with.
1) jesus waited three days to come back to life. it was perfect! if he had only waited one day, a lot of people wouldn’t have even heard he died. they’d be all, “hey jesus, what up?” and jesus would probably be like, “what up? i died yesterday!” and they’d be all, “uh, you look pretty alive to me, dude…” and then jesus would have to explain how he was resurrected, and how it was a miracle, and the dude’d be like “uhh okay, whatever you say, bro…” and he’s not gonna come back on a sat-rday. everybody’s busy, doing ch-r-s, workin’ the loom, trimmin’ the beard, no. he waited the perfect number of days, three. plus it’s sunday, so everyone’s in church already, and they’re all in there like “oh no, jesus is dead”, and then bam! he bursts in the back door, runnin’ up the aisle, everyone’s totally psyched, and fyi, that’s when he invented the high five. that’s why we wait three days to call a woman, because that’s how long jesus wants us to wait…. true story.

2) person 1: yellow lights just mean ‘go faster.’
person 2: true story.
once there was a popular kid at school who thought it would be funny to say “true story” after every sentence, regardless of if it was actually a story or not. all of the unpopular kids saw him doing it and thought they could be cool if they did it as well. eventually people started saying it on facebook and mysp-ce. now every kid under the age of 13 (and some unfortunate older people) think that it makes them funny, ironic, and cool to repeat “true story” whenever they speak.
example 1. i like c-ke, true story.

example 2. (noun) (verb) true story.
