You’re Probably Right
a phrase used to dodge the blame and embarr-ssment -ssociated with getting an answer wrong.
jack: “i know that girl her name is cindy”
joe: “she’s my neighbor, her name is angela”
jack: “you’re probably right”
a way of disagreeing with someone without saying “you’re wrong” outright; can be clever, polite, subtle, or patronizing, depending on the emphasis given to the word ‘probably.’
adam: the earth revolves around the sun.
dan: no way, dude, the sun totally revolves around the earth.
adam: you’re probably right.
