allende, salvador [(ah-yen-de)]
a marxist (see marxism) who was elected president of chile in 1970. he set the country on a radical course, which aroused opposition from the middle cl-ss and the army. he was overthrown and died during an army coup supported by the cia in 1973.
note: allende remains a hero to many on the left wing in latin america.
