argument from ignorance
when there isn’t evidence for one thing, side, etc. so then someone claims the opposition is true. there are various examples on this, but the basic outline goes like this: x hasn’t been proven false (or impossible) so x must be true (or possible). it works the other way around, too.
another popular form to this is the following: “how do you explain x without the existence of y?”
“do you think it’s possible that a god exists?”
“of course, because you can’t prove that it’s impossible.”
“really? the argument from ignorance? i’ll call you a cab, billy. you’re clearly drunk.”
another example…
“i know you ate all the dog food”
“huh?”
“well if you didn’t, how do you explain the fact that there’s not any dog food left in the bowl?”
“uh, maybe t h e d o g.”
“oh.”
